Finish Levels

Before we look at textures we need to discuss the level of finish as defined by the wall and ceiling industry and what it means.  Finish levels range from levels 1 through 5. Level 1 being the least and Level 5 being the highest.  Each level has it’s own application in the building industry and this finish level guide was developed to allow architects the ability to specify what goes where.   Level 1 is used where all that is needed is to seal the joints from air, dust or fire penetration.  Level 5 is used mainly in institutional applications.

Weishuhn Drywall LLC produces a finish product that is consistent with a Level 4 finish.

Level 4 is as follows:  joints are taped and coated with two separate coats of compound; angles are taped with one separate coat of compound covering tape.  Accessories such as bead are coated with three separate coats of compound.  Joint compound should be free of tool marks and ridges.

Weishuhn Drywall LLC varies the Level 4 standard because we apply 3 separate coats over joints and we apply two separate coats on vertical angles when smooth work is specified.  Because we use a ‘tape-on’ corner bead that uses joint compound as it’s ‘fastener’, this product only requires two separate coats to produce the same results as in a level 4 finish.  The Level 4 is the standard finish for Weishuhn Drywall LLC.

Textures

Now we can talk about textures.

Textures are many and varied.  Textures add dimension and interest to otherwise dull walls and ceilings. Some textures are used only on ceilings while others can be used on both walls and ceilings.  The standard textures that we offer are knockdown, acoustic spray, rosebud, swirl, orange peel, Scottish linen and splatter.

  1. Swirl and acoustic spray are mainly ceiling textures.
  2. Orange peel and Scottish linen are mainly wall textures.
  3. Knockdown, rosebud, and splatter can be used for both walls and ceilings.

Why Texture?

First and foremost texture adds warmth, elegance, and interest to walls and ceilings.  They are very functional and add style to different rooms.  Secondly, there is no such thing as a flat straight wall or ceiling.  What we try to do as wall and ceiling finishers is to give the ‘appearance’ of flat and straight surfaces.  Textures are one of the tools we use to blend the porosity of the finished drywall board.  When a joint is coated with compound and sanded the surface of the joint has a different porosity, of feel than the drywall board.  The joint is very smooth where as the drywall board has a matted surface.  Under the right lighting conditions the difference in the surfaces can show through the finished painted product.    Texture minimizes this effect by making the wall and ceiling surfaces one porosity.

The Level 5 institutional finish requires for the entire surface of walls and ceiling to have a skim coat of joint compound applied and then sanded smooth!!

Highly labor intensive = cost increases. Texture helps keep cost under control and at the same time gives style and charm to your home.
